DARVID THOR RETURNS WITH ‘TO REMEMBER YOURSELF’; A PLAYFUL DANCE AROUND GROWTH AND REGRESSION
Today, Darvid Thor announces his signing to Naarm/Melbourne label Beloved Recordings and presents his first single and video, ‘To Remember Yourself’. Garnering support from Beach Fossils and Danger Mouse around his 2019 debut ‘I’m Never Really Here’, Darvid ushers us into familiar corners with his new track; places that speak to the totality of adulthood and the congestions of experience. Darvid Thor’s talent for turning the temperate and tiresome into something a little more serene is a testament to someone whose equanimity remains a cornerstone of their sound.
“It’s a “1 step forward, 2 steps back” type of dance”, says Darvid. “A reminder to come back to yourself when you’re not feeling super present, but also a recognition of the fickleness of the human experience. That constant back and forth between growth and regression, but ultimately headed towards a place of calm and presence.”
Where ‘To Remember Yourself’ disrupts the trodden indie omission is through its careful distribution of emotional weight to each part and player. Co-produced alongside Beloved label mate Lewis Coleman (Mo’Ju, The Cactus Channel, Chitra, Ruby Gill, Kat Edwards), To Remember Yourself sets a new tone for Darvid’s music, leaning into a softness and warmth hinted at in previous releases. Nudged along by Hudson Whitlock’s (Karate Boogaloo, Surprise Chef) dazed percussion and Lewis Coleman’s aloof bassline, Darvids’ lyrics quickly lose their reticence, eventually finding their fullest expression between tides of buttery synths and the winded coos of Georgia Gamper.
‘To Remember Yourself’ is accompanied by a vibrant clip shot on Kodak 16mm film, co-directed with the iconic BridgetteWinten(Maple Glider, Winten). Filmed in one shot with no edits, Darvid worked with close friend ElenaForeman to use movement and dance as a way to embody the song's themes of self-connection and impermanence.
Having entirely self-recorded and produced his previous record I’m Never Really Here (2019), Darvid felt the urge to open up a process that would allow him to create in a deeper and more nuanced way; a creative process rooted in community and friendship. Since the beginning, this strong community has surrounded Darvid, playing in bands The Cactus Channel, Frida, Karate Boogaloo, and more recently Winten, Lewis Coleman, and The Pro-Teens.
